Winter Mountain Leader WML training & assessment in Scotland
Winter Mountain Leaders WML take groups of walkers into the mountains in winter conditions, where an ice axe and crampons are often essential. The qualification builds on the skills learnt through the Mountain Leader ML scheme to prepare candidates for the complexities associated with taking people out in wintery environments.
Please note: You must already hold the Mountain Leader ML, have submitted and had your Dlog approved by Mountain Training Scotland. This requires a minimum of 20 winter QMD's.

Six days packed with learning and practical experience in the winter mountains of the Scottish Highlands.
We offer courses in the Cairngorms and also in the Glencoe/Ben Nevis area. Utilising fantastic venues to take you through syllabus thoroughly with as much hands on practice as possible. These six days will help you understand and build the key knowledge, skills and judgment you need to lead people safely in the winter environment. At the end we strive for you to enter the consolidation phase with a clear action plan on the things you need to do prior to coming forward for an assessment.
The modern Winter Mountain Leader needs to be highly adaptable and opportunistic, the fluctuating feast or famine trends we are seeing with conditions demand a flexible approach and attitude. This is reflected in our itinerary for the week, days are interchangeable and often move around to make the most of each days learning opportunities. We will cover the full syllabus over the week using mostly practical but with some theory sessions.
Once a booking for has been submitted (you must have your Dlog approved by Mountain Training Scotland beforehand) you will receive all the joining instructions and kit list. We also offer an evening zoom session prior to the course. This gives the opportunity to discuss any relevant issues, talk through expectations and also run through the kit list thoroughly. It provides you with a great opportunity to ask anything, big or small, prior to attending this fantastic six-day training course.
